Children face severe risks
According to the United Nations, 90% of people have been displaced in Gaza. Many have been displaced repeatedly.
Thousands of children have been killed, maimed or separated from their families. Children and young people are the most exposed to violence and deprivation. This is especially true for children who do not have the care of their families.
Children who are separated from their families face severe risks of exploitation. They need special protection and care, while everything is done to reunite them with their families.

People projected to face famine
The threat of famine
The situation in Gaza is changing daily. At the time of writing in mid-2025, humanitarian organizations are warning of acute levels of hunger. Around half a million people are projected to face the most severe level of acute food insecurity, also known as “catastrophe” or “famine”.
A growing number of children are suffering from acute malnutrition. Food is extremely hard to get hold of and is very expensive. While at times some humanitarian aid is allowed to enter Gaza, it is nowhere near enough. Child malnutrition has long-lasting consequences for children’s physical and mental development.

How your support helps in Rafah (>Khan Younis)
Strengthening families and communities
When parents face hardships, they can sometimes struggle to give children the care they need. SOS Children’s Villages works with local partners and communities. Each family needs different support. At present, this support includes emergency access to shelter, food and clean water. Likewise, we ensure that children can get medical help and continue their education as best as possible. We are also providing mental health support to children and their families.
Providing quality education
SOS Children’s Villages ensures that children and young people have access to high-quality education. We help them learn and develop in a safe and supportive environment. We train teachers on children’s rights and child-centered learning, so that each child can get the most out of their education. Young children spend time playing and learning at kindergarten. This prepares them for primary school. In Gaza we are working with partners to make schooling possible.
Providing care in emergencies
In times of conflict, natural disasters and mass displacement, we respond to the urgent needs of children and families. We provide immediate support, shelter and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. SOS Children’s Villages also focuses on preventing the separation of families, and ensures that children, young people and families receive psychological and health care support.
Caring for children who cannot live with their families
Some children cannot stay with their families, even with additional support. When this happens, they can find a new home in SOS Children’s Villages. At the moment they are living in the camp in Khan Younis. We do our best to ensure that all the children in our care have access to education and healthcare. Wherever possible, we work closely with the children’s family of origin. If children can return to live with their families, we help them adapt to this change.
