SOS Children's Village Dornbirn/Vorarlberg
The SOS Children's Village of Dornbirn was opened in 1966 and thus is the youngest SOS Children's Village in Austria. It is situated on a hill with beautiful views over the Rhine valley of the province of Vorarlberg and to the Swiss mountain ranges and Lake Constance. Not far from the SOS Children's Village is Alberschwende, Hermann Gmeiner's native village.
There are 11 family-units in the SOS Children's Village of Dornbirn, caring for 5 - 6 children each. One building is used for leisure activities and also houses a teaching workshop. The office is in the Community Centre, as well as a kitchen, a tailor's workshop, a kindergarten and staff quarters. The kindergarten can also be attended by children from the neighbourhood. The children of the SOS Children's Village go to the local schools. The teenagers live at the SOS Youth Facility or at the SOS Girls' Residence in Bregenz.
