Brovary, a town with around 98,000 inhabitants, is located approximately 20 km from the capital city of Kyiv, which is home to around 3 million people. Due to its proximity to the capital, many people have moved to Brovary in order to work in Kiev. Since the start of the war in February 2022, Kyiv has suffered some of the worst damage, with up to 90% of the capital’s people affected by power outages and water system failures.

Since 2003, SOS Children’s Villages has been supporting children, young people and families and advocating for their rights in Kyiv Region/Brovary.

People in need of health assistance

Damage to health and education

According to the United Nations, an estimated 14.5 million Ukrainians are in need of medical assistance. Health care in Ukraine has been disrupted by the fighting – many health facilities, including hospitals, have been damaged by the fighting. People who have had to leave their homes also face specific health challenges – they are not always able to access the medical care and medication that they need. This is especially dangerous for people with chronic illnesses. In this situation, new mothers and young children are particularly vulnerable to becoming weak and ill.

17.7 M
People need cash assistance

Marginalized and deprived

Many people who have been displaced by the fighting find it difficult to secure housing and work, and to receive social benefits. As a result, 17.7 million people need to receive assistance through cash. 76% of those in need of support are women and children. Without assistance, many families are unable to meet the immediate basic needs of their children, including shelter and food. As a result, children are at risk of malnourishment, homelessness and losing parental care during this time of unprecedented upheaval.

How your support helps in Kyiv Region/Brovary

Strengthening families and communities
In times of conflict we support families so that they can cover their basic needs – food, shelter and security. In times of peace, we are able to provide more long-term support for families facing hardship. SOS Children’s Villages works with local partners and communities. Each family needs different support so that they can stay together. This support can include workshops on parenting and children’s rights. We also run trainings so that parents can get the skills they need to get a job.
Supporting children, young people and families in emergencies
In times of conflict and mass displacement, we respond to the urgent needs of children and families. Working alongside local partners and community-based organizations, we provide immediate support and shelter and sanitation. As the situation evolves, we adapt our response accordingly. SOS Children’s Villages focuses on preventing the separation of families, and ensures that children, young people and families receive psychological and health care support.
Caring for children who cannot live with their families
Some children cannot stay with their families, even with additional support. When this happens, they can find a new home in SOS Children’s Villages. Many of these foster families have sought refuge in countries near Ukraine. All the children in our care have access to education and healthcare. Wherever possible, we work closely with the children’s family of origin. If children can return to live with their families, we help them adapt to this change.
